What Internet Speed Do You Actually Need? A Household Guide
Every provider wants to sell you the biggest number on the page. Most households don't need it. Here's how to figure out what you actually need — and the one number providers rarely advertise that matters just as much as download speed.
The two numbers on every plan
Download speed is what most marketing shouts about — it's how fast data comes to you: streaming, web browsing, downloading. Upload speed is how fast data leaves your house — video calls, cloud backups, posting content, and increasingly, the thing that makes remote work actually work. Cable and DSL plans often advertise huge download numbers while quietly capping upload far lower (a 500 Mbps cable plan might upload at only 20 Mbps). Fiber is typically symmetric — same speed both directions — which is the biggest practical reason to prefer it if it's available at your address.
Speed by household, roughly
- 1 person, light use (browsing, streaming one device, occasional calls): 25–100 Mbps down / 10+ up is plenty.
- 2–3 people, normal use (streaming, video calls, some remote work, gaming): 100–300 Mbps down / 20+ up covers this comfortably.
- 4+ people or heavy use (multiple 4K streams, video calls in different rooms simultaneously, large downloads, smart-home devices): 300–500 Mbps down / 50+ up is a safer floor.
- Gigabit (1000 Mbps) and up: genuinely useful for large households with heavy simultaneous use, frequent large file transfers, or multiple people uploading/streaming at once — not because any single activity needs it, but because speed gets divided across everyone using it at the same time.
The FCC's current baseline definition of "broadband" is 100 Mbps download / 20 Mbps upload — a reasonable floor for most households, worth using as your minimum bar even if a cheaper, slower plan is tempting.
What actually eats bandwidth
- 4K streaming: ~25 Mbps per simultaneous stream; HD: ~5–8 Mbps.
- Video calls: 3–8 Mbps down and up per call — this is where upload speed quietly becomes the bottleneck in a house with two people on calls at once.
- Cloud gaming and large downloads: bursty, benefits from higher download ceilings.
- Smart-home devices: individually tiny, but a house with 20+ connected devices adds up and benefits from a router that isn't the weak link (see below).
The part that isn't about your plan at all
A slow-feeling connection is very often a Wi-Fi problem, not a speed problem. A gigabit plan through an old router, or through three walls to a back bedroom, can feel slower than a 200 Mbps plan with a well-placed router or mesh system. Before upgrading your plan to fix slowness, test a device wired directly (or standing next to the router) — if that's fast and the far room isn't, the fix is a mesh Wi-Fi system, not a bigger internet bill.
The practical rule
Pick the plan tier just above your household's normal peak — video calls, streaming, and gaming happening at the same time — not your average moment. Check what's actually available at your address (technology matters as much as the number — fiber's symmetric upload is worth more in practice than a bigger cable download number), and resist the highest tier unless your household genuinely has many people using bandwidth simultaneously.
